WHAT IS JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (JLPT)?
JAPANESE LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TEST (JLPT) is a standardized criterion-referenced test that sets benchmarks and certifies you on your proficiency in the Japanese language, which is administered by the Japan Educational Exchange and Services (JEES) in Japan and by the Japan Foundation overseas. This is an important test that is required to be cleared by foreigners who want to work or study (in some cases) in Japan.
Not all institutions in Japan require foreign students to be JLPT certified. While some universities in Japan are taught in English, taking into consideration the foreign students, most Japanese universities are taught in Japanese and for this, you would need to be able to understand, read and speak Japanese. In such universities, you would need to have N1 or N2 level certificates to catch up with the Japanese students.
There are 5 level of the JLPT:
- N1 – Advanced Level:
This is the most advanced level of the JLPT. N1 certificate holders read and understand complex writings on different topics such as the critique and editorial columns of a newspaper. They can understand conversations, news reports as well as lectures. - N2 – Pre-Advanced Level:
This level is much like N1. N2 certificate holders can read and understand materials such as newspapers and magazines’ articles, commentaries as well as critiques. They can grasp conversations and news reports spoken at a natural speed. - N3 – Intermediate Level:
The reading level of an N3 certificate holder is higher than N4 and N5 certificate holders, as N3 certified people can read moderately difficult writings, specific contents about everyday topics as well as newspaper headlines. They can speak at a mediocre speed, can usually follow the content topics and understand the relationships among the people involved. - N4 – Elementary Level:
Those with N4 certificates can read simple sentences written in basic vocabulary and kanji. They are also able to listen to and understand everyday conversations and generally grasp their contents as long as the speaker is speaking slowly to them. - N5 – Basic Level:
This is the easiest level that one can clear. N5 certificate holders can read some simple phrases written in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. They can listen to and understand everyday conversations. They can also comprehend the meaning of other conversations when spoken slowly.

OUR STUDENTS’ TESTIMONIES:
“It has always been a dream of mine to visit Japan because I am a huge fan of anime and manga especially Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa and Death Note by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. So, when I saw a Facebook status of an old classmate of mine saying that she is going to study and work in Japan, I inboxed her and asked her to tell me more about it. She gave me the link to AKAL Japanese Academy.
I went through their website and I knew it would be my chance to finally learn Japanese and get the opportunity to study in Japan. I am very glad that I was given the chance to join their Japanese language course.
I had the most wonderful experience at AKAL Japanese Academy. The teachers and staff are all so patient. They motivate me every day to work harder because they also knew that I was struggling at the beginning.
Thankfully through hard work and the help of the teachers, I was able to clear my N5 Japanese Language Proficiency Test and landed the opportunity to study at Richinomri School, Tokyo.
I cannot thank AKAL Japanese Academy for launching their Study In Japan program, which has made many dreams, like mine, come true.”
-Amit Kumar (32), New Delhi
“After I graduated from Delhi University, I was not sure about my career path but I knew that I wanted a job that would allow me to travel or work in a foreign country. I took some time for myself to go through my options.
Then, in the fourth month, my friend recommended that we join a Japanese language class in Green Park that she heard about from her friend. As I was still in the process of figuring out what to do with my life, I agreed. Little did I know that it would be the place where I would find my new goal.
I think it was my ability to learn the language effortlessly that enhanced my interest in not only the Japanese language but the country itself and everything about it. Through my newfound interest, I decided that I would go to Japan and take up a part-time job while studying in Japan.
The teachers helped me clear the JLPT test and I was able to get certified at an N5 level. They even helped with my visa application, which I was quite nervous about. They also helped me find a part-time job.
Thanks to their support and motivation, I will be attending Aiwa School in the city of Fukuoka next month. I cannot wait to start this new chapter in my life.
If you want to visit Japan to work or study there, I highly recommend that you choose AKAL Japanese Academy. Here, you will get to learn Japanese from Japanese native teachers.”
-Shiwani Lukhra (24), Delhi
“Ever since I was young, it has always been my wish to study abroad no matter the country. After I graduated from Delhi University, I thought my chance of studying abroad was over until my sister sent me a blog ‘Some unique facts about Japanese Culture’ published by AKAL Japanese Academy’s blog page. After reading the blog, I visited their website and found out that they can help people learn Japanese language, study, or work abroad at a really reasonable cost. I knew that it was the perfect opportunity to make my wish come true.
I enrolled and joined their classes where they not only teach Japanese but also help us know more about Japan, the people, the cultures, traditions, business etiquettes, and many more. The classes were always so much fun with activities and games. I really respect and admire the teacher, (who by the way are beyond qualified, I must say) for always having so much patience with us and always encouraging me even when I felt like I might not clear the JLPT.
Luckily, I did and I am super excited as I will be studying at Aiwa School, Fukuoka, Japan.
A massive thank you to AKAL’s Study in Japan Program and the brilliant teachers for making it happen for me. I will never forget the support and help you have given me. I wish you all the best of luck in your future.”
-Mansi Mahajan (24), North Delhi
“I got to know about AKAL Japanese Academy from a Facebook post shared by a friend. Since I am a fan of Japanese manga and have always wanted to learn Japanese and eventually visit Japan one day, I figured it was the perfect opportunity for me.
I did my admissions and went for the classes, which were entertaining most of the time because apart from learning, we would also participate in activities such as role-plays or make origami or learn how to use chopsticks. I also learned to converse a little with one of my Japanese native teachers, which, for me, was a huge milestone I would say.
After 4 months of classes and preparations, I took my JLPT exam and cleared the N5 level. With the help of the amazing staff and AKAL Japanese Academy’s Study In Japan program, I will be joining Richinomri School in Tokyo. After that, I plan to build my career in Japan.
To AKAL Japanese Academy, the wonderful staff and skilled teachers, thank you so much for teaching me Japanese, passing the JLPT exam, getting me admitted to an amazing school, and for assisting with my visa application process.”
-Rakibul Haque, (30), New Delhi
“A close friend of mine got to study and work in Japan through this program. He would tell me to join AKAL’s Japanese Academy every time we spoke on the phone or chat online. He said that it was the best decision he’s ever made and that the staff and teachers are actually very helpful and supportive. He said that the Study In Japan program is the best and most legitimate way (as I am quite wary of scammers claiming that they will send you abroad to study or work if you pay them) to study in Japan.
As it seemed to work out for him and I trust him, I decided to enroll myself in the Japanese language course.
I have never been more interested in learning new things because the teachers’ methods of teaching are superb, entertaining, and fun.
I have passed my JLPT test and I am very happy that I will be attending Aiwa School in Fukuoka, Japan.
I would like to thank AKAL Japanese Academy and its fine teachers as well as staff for giving me the opportunity to go to Japan and for assisting me every step of the way.”
